Towards a Standards Compliant Web*

* Title stolen from Aja, WaSP ILG Ambassador to the Philippines

I scoured through my YM archive just for this. The conversation was held the evening of January 15.

Aja: gawa naman tayo ng web standards group dito sa pinas
Shari: ala pa ba?
Aja: webstandards.org.ph … anyone?
Shari: or webstandards-ph.org errr
Aja: tapos translations from WaSP nakapost duon

Basically, the string of blurbs is just about a mere idea to build a group of web standards geeks advocates here in the Philippines. Together with Lexie, we’ve had a couple of talks regarding it though no concrete plan has been made yet. We have also asked for Sir Regnard’s assistance in this project. So far, we have only thought of putting up translations, articles, discussions, and, quite possibly, tutorials in the website.

And it seems that after just a month, the idea turned into a plan which is finally taking shape. We hope to be an excellent resource of the Filipinos who want to learn how to build standards-compliant websites. There are still a lot of things to be considered, but the important thing is that we’re all motivated to push through this thing. We hope to invite individuals who also advocate and love web standards to join us in our journey towards a better web. *looks at Mae, Anne, Aravis, Ellie, Kat, etc.*

The simple fact that the use of <u> is already deprecated.

We’ve got the space, and now we only need the domain webstandards.org.ph. We’re accepting cash, lol. Sponsor, and you’ll get our love. For queries, don’t hesitate to email me at shari@misteryosa.com =)

Seems to be a good idea, but don’t you think setting standards limit creativity on the web?

  2. Regnard

    Sige, sama ako dyan, :)

  3. L.A

Wow diba yan yung sinabi mo sakin last time nun pauwi na tau…hmpp a good idea! Waaaah am looking for donations din for my domain yung .ph kasi cost P2000+ kaya .com na lang. Good Luck on that!

  4. aichee

ooh goodluck withthe web standards thing :)

  5. anne

goodluck sa plan nyuh sis.. ^_^

  6. Lexie

    We have space?! Woot.

Wow, I am such a space cadet. I don’t even know what’s going on now. I’m sorry.

No, Darwin. Just look at the CSS Zen Garden, A List Apart, et al. They have tons of standards-compliant stuff without compromising creativity—their articles and products even exhibit what creative minds can do. And, btw, we aren’t planning to set standards—W3C, and other standards bodies do that—we just want to promote them. :)

  10. tiffany

oh that sounds like a great idea. gusto ko mag-donate kaso butas bulsa ko sa kaka-shopping wahahaha :(

  11. ethel

sounds cool! good luck nalang sa lahat ng plano nyo Shar :)
    Happy weekend!!!

  12. Shari

Acck I didn’t mean to post this today! I was supposed to publish this entry tomorrow! This was supposed to be just a draft! Huhu! Stupid me.

Darwin: Read Aja’s comment. =) And really, some great and very creative websites are actually standards-compliant.

    Regnard: Thanks po. =)

LA: Oh, is this it? I’ve forgotten haha! Thanks.

Lexie: Yes, we have space! 1 GB of it, baby!!! =D

Sherica: If you’ve learned HTML from the right resources, you’d have an idea what it is. ^_^

    Tiffany: Booo! Haha!

  13. Kat

*point to self* who me? LOL! Yeah of course! I think it’s a great idea. If we could turn just 10 of some of those horrible bright pink errors everywhere blogs that some Filipinos put out there into decent viewable websites then I think it would be worthwhile.

  14. Shari

Kat: Amen to that. :) Thanks! I’ll count you in, haha! :D

  15. Aravis

Okay, I’ll bite. :-P I think it’s a great idea, and I’ll be happy to chip in wherever I can.

  16. Mae

pwede bang .org na nga lang?? hehehe probloggers will only be able to afford the .org.ph domain, it costs like gold here! heheh

  17. Anne

You can count me in as long as there are gonna be cookies. ^.^

  18. Eja

That’s nice! :) Well, that will be good for all. Some people don’t even know how to code properly. Yeah. I’m one of them but not that improper. I know some standards but not all.

  19. ems

yeah I agree.. sobrang mahal ng .PH domains

eh paano ba naman kasi, naka monopolize sa dot.ph ang registry ng PH (or Philippine for that matter) domains. Hate them .. and I hate them bigtime! Sobrang swapang kasi eh.. ayaw nila i-open sa iba ang .ph registry. Yun ibang nakakapag offer ng .ph registration are just resellers of dot.ph

Kaya bwisit na bwisit talaga ako dyan sa company na yan. I do admire UK and US for opening their registry on public… oh well…

  20. Neil

Hmm, that’s nice. Now that I could finally learn how to put up a site that is not rejected my w3c whatever.

Yet i’m losing my grip to html. Geez.

  21. Shari

Aravis: But of course I’m not pulling your leg, lol. Thank you.

Mae: Errr..Alam mo namang may webstandards.org na diba? Ang panget kasi ng webstandardsph.org. Maganda na talagang Pinas na Pinas ang dating ng web standards group dito. :D You’re in, ha?

Ate Ems: Buti na lang some resellers like Ploghost actually offer cheap registration fee compared to others na mahigit PhP2K pa, and that’s just for one year registration. o_O

    Neil: But nooooo!

  22. Alternati

I haven’t the slightest notion what web standards are… hehehe. I do get the idea of standardization as applied in other fields but I don’t know yet how it applies to web sites. I guess I’ll be a frequent visitor on the site when you’ve got it up and running.

    I’m a quick study. :D

  23. jami

aww.. cash? hahaha.. sana matuloy yan! weeehee!! ahem. add kita sa links ko ha :D

    Jami: Thanks. =)

    Nice… Good luck with that!

  27. jeff

Whaaattt?? The U tag is deprecated? I didn’t know that. Seriously

Not that I ever used the thing..

Fastfact: of the 3 major browsers, Opera 9 is the only one that has passed the Acid2 test. But you probably already know that too :P

  28. jorge

Hi Shari, I had my WP set to auto publish when saving, but I was still writing it when you posted your comment on my site. Please feel free to read the rest of it and double post :)

  29. meckay

good luck with your plan ^^ aniways link ex?

  30. Raymond

Hey good luck with the project.Sounds interesting eh….Can’t wait to see everything being put up.Again, good luck.

  31. Aurus

Hey that’s a really great idea! =] Good luck!

  32. Shari

Jeff: Haha, it is. Since, uhm, HTML 4.01. Documents with that font style element will validate in Transitional and Frameset, but not in Strict. ^_^ Haay, the hard-to-pass Acid2 test. I should switch to Opera, you know. Harhar!

Jorge: Sorry for the veeery loooong response. :D

    Meckay: Sure thing. =)

But it’s still expensive compared to .org :-P why not use a .org instead?

    Towards a Standards Compliant Web

Several weeks ago, with the discussions on and my involvement with WaSP ILG and recently with PWAG, I was struck by the idea of forming an advocacy group here in the Philippines concerning Web standards.

  36. Aisha

waw ang ganda ng naisip niyo ni lexie nkooo i’ll support you there~!

  37. Musme

Wow… I didn’t understand your chat, but the idea sounds pretty good. Hope you get the sponsorship you need to open it. Good luck!

  38. Mae

why not start as .org and the migrate to .org.ph of and when the funds “come in”

  39. Ellie

    Wait…so you’re saying I love web standards?

….Haha, just kidding. Sure! :D I’d love to take part in this project thingamajig. It would be nice to see some changes in websites…

  40. Rach

Sounds like a great project. I’m personally interested in learning about web standards. Good luck on this worthwhile endeavor.

  41. Danielle

Interesting I must say, very involved over there; it makes me ashame to say I do not try to partake in helping out over here. Still lost as to what is being established but it sounds very intriguing and contributive. Good luck with everything!

  42. sexy mom

since i am only a content person, not a technical one, can i volunteer the services of my son, J Angelo of The J Spot (http://racoma.com.ph).
    good luck, dear Shari!

  43. nickle

good luck on that web standards thing..

    sorry but…OT!

yep, my site loads faster coz i got rid of most of the rotations. will get rid of a couple more. of course i’ll join ur rotation. the ones i kept are owned by people i know online.

the layout was premade though. i’m too lazy to make my own. hahaha! i’m bad with color combination too so i sometimes get schemes from colorschemer.com

  44. Irene

Oh how I love commenting on blogs with entries I can’t understand. *lmao* It’s okay though, I’ll just pretend to understand, yea, that’s the ticket. XD
    (despair)

  45. May

That seems like an excellent idea! I would totally help out, but I’m poor. lol. Hope everything goes well!

Ellie: But of course you do! :p

Sexy Mom: If you can force the J Spotter to help out, why no? LOL LOL. :D

    Hello Shari!

This is Jojo of PWAG. Remember our group? :yay: BTW, congrats nga pala for winning the best personal blog awards. Naks! You truly deserve it. Kinongratulate ka nga pala ng group sa Accessibleweb e-group including Ma’am Nel of National Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons.

Regarding the webstandards.org.ph group, that would be a very great idea. Wala pa atang ganito sa Pinas. I think Regnard is doing some great advocacies about Web Standards. Probably we can coordinate with him.

    Congrats again.

    @Darwin..

No, creativity is in fact more challenged and fired-up when you start following web standards, specifically W3C (what else is there).

You can DO MORE (emphasize) with following the W3C web standards than disobeying ;)

The real problem lies with the application you are using and the downloaded themes/skins you are using for your site. It’s really a pain to check all stuff of your downloaded theme and front/back-end applications.

    ———–

I’ll gladly join, I’ve been waiting and searching for this group for 10 years already. Been on the forefront of W3C standards, mastered HTML 4 when the world and schools are still using/teaching HTML 2 and HTML 3 :p I hate those days when browsers don’t support HTML 4 and CSS 2 :P hahaha… can’t wait to get back on the business of web standards.
